Secondary Cause
Community Improvement & Capacity Building
At CLLARO we develop young Latino leaders in Colorado through our Capitol Fellowship Program to increase diversity in the state legislature. We train community leaders to advocate on issues like education, health and aging. And we provide our community with in-depth policy research to ensure they have data-driven policy recommendations that support Latinos in Colorado.
Our mission is to empower Latinos through leadership development, advocacy, and research to strengthen Colorado and our vision is a Colorado where Latinos are achieving their fullest potential.

Leadership development remains at the core of CLLARO's mission. The flagship Capitol Fellowship Program pairs selected college students with a Colorado State Legislator for a paid, part-time, public policy internship and leadership development training.

Caring and generous people make a difference in people's lives. The best way we can illustrate this is to share Kara's story with you. She is 2016 graduate of the Capitol Fellowship Program:
“Just imagine a six-year-old girl brimming with pride in her Mexican-American heritage. I knew that I looked different from others, but it hurt when people in our community made cruel comments that made me feel like an outsider to both worlds.
Even when I was young girl, I knew my destiny was to help others like me overcome discrimination and develop themselves as leaders.
Today, I am still proud of my mixed heritage and proud to be a professional. I am fulfilling my childhood ambitions to help individuals of diverse backgrounds reach their full potential and to help communities.”

You know how difficult it is to have your voice heard, build a career, obtain affordable healthcare, navigate the educational system and interact with children’s schoolteachers. For many Latinos, even basic crucial life building blocks can be so hard to achieve. Research confirms that inequities still persist.
Strengthening communities through mindful advocacy and research has evolved during CLLARO’s 54 years. This includes hands-on training with community residents through our Community Health Advocacy Program (CHAP) and our new program, Parents Advocating for Local Schools (PALS).
As noted in our highlighted program, leadership development through the flagship Capitol Fellowship Program remains at the heart of CLLARO. Matching deserving college students with a Colorado State Legislator for training to become leaders in public policy or in the business community.
